Who are we?

The Journey School (TJS) is a public charter school located at 775 Lexington Parkway N in the
Midway neighborhood of St. Paul, MN. TJS serves students in grades Kindergarten – 8th.

Our vision at TJS is to empower teachers, engage parents, and inspire a community by setting high
expectations through technology-supported teaching and learning, implementing high standards, and
measuring results. Our goal is to close the achievement gap for students who attend TJS by raising
achievement for all. Engaged parents are key to closing the achievement gap and ensuring every
student is meeting expectations. TJS will develop parent leaders within the school community through
a parent-teacher organization and the community at large. Every child will gain an appreciation for
cultural differences and learn the value of respect, hard work, and character throughout their learning
program.

We will implement this vision through a blended learning model, which integrates technology into
classrooms creating a flexible space that allows teachers to have more individualized time with
students by leveraging a variety of tools to engage them in a personalized learning process.

The Journey School is looking for a Director of Special Education Saint Paul, MN. The Director of Special Education is responsible for monitoring and overseeing all aspects of the special education programs and services in their assigned program. This position works closely with the program’s administrative teams and special education staff to ensure effective special education programming and leadership in special education, due process monitoring and compliance, and management of administrative tasks. 

Duties and Responsibilities Include (but not limited to): 

  • Provides leadership and vision to ensure continuous organizational development and improvement. 
  • Keeps abreast of community services and resources; develops partnerships with parents, businesses/organizations, and other agencies in order to build awareness, develop support, and share resources. 
  • Collaborates effectively with District staff, families, special education teachers, and the community for the purpose of planning, developing, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating educational services and/or programs.  
  • Implements conflict resolution skills in a variety of situations with staff, families, and the community. 
  • Develops proposals, new programs, budgets and grants for the purpose of meeting the District’s Strategic Plan and goals. 
  • Maintains a high level of knowledge regarding developing special education issues, changes in the laws and case law, and educational methods of educating students with disabilities, for the purpose of managing an excellent special education program. 
  • Incorporates policies and procedures in accordance with laws and regulations.  
  • Ensures that all practices in the district are legal and ethical for each student/family so that each child has the opportunity to achieve at a high level and be prepared for post-secondary success. 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must hold a Professional Administrative license as Director of Special Education issued by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board
  • Three to five years experience as a Director of Special Education preferred
  • Qualified candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations, rules and obligations of a special education provider 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and procedures of regular and special education administration and the School District
  • Comprehensive knowledge of curriculum and program development for students 
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to communicate complex information to a culturally diverse cross-section of individuals and organizations
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Demonstrate effective leadership skills and strong short-term and long-term planning abilities focused on continuous improvement and innovation
  • Be supportive of community/parent involvement and should be able to network with community groups 
  • Have an understanding of fiscal and ethical responsibility
At The Journey School we are looking to contract with a Special Education Director to work closely with us in our programming. We are looking for someone who can be onsite and at least twice a month for consultation and to assist with program development.
